About BitLocker encryption

Bit Locker is a way of protecting your hard drive by means of full disk encryption. It protects your hard drive from offline attack, meaning your data will be protected when a malicious user gets access to your hard drive physically. BitLocker makes the drive unreadable, so the data on it cannot be accessed.

BitLocker is designed in such a way that your hard drive data does not go into wrong hands, but at the same time, it makes it easy for PC owners (or the admin) to access the drive in the event of a failure. Also, another advantage of using BitLocker is that you can encrypt only select partitions on the hard drive.

What happens to the BitLocker partition when you format the primary partition that houses the OS?

Say for instance you have a BitLocker encrypted partition on your hard drive and you format the primary partition that contains the OS. What happens in these situations?

It is always recommended that you decrypt the Bit Locked partitions and then format the OS containing partition. But in the event that you have formatted the OS partition without decrypting Bit Locked partitions, you will find that the Bit Locked partitions will be locked.

To unlock these encrypted partitions, you will need the recovery key. This is the key you are asked to create during the initial set up the BitLocker encryption. This key is required if you are locked out of your hard drive or if the hard drive isn’t unlocking normally. You can have the key printed, written down, saved in a file or on an external drive or saved online in a Microsoft account.

If you enter the recovery key, you will be allowed to access the drive and its contents. You can follow the steps below to unlock the BitLocker encrypted partition on your hard drive using the recovery key:

  1. Boot into your system and type ‘Control Panel’ in the taskbar search
  2. Open Control Panel > System & Security > BitLocker Drive Encryption

It has the ability to recover data from encrypted as well as password protected partitions. This tool is also capable of recovering data from formatted Bit Locker partitions.

If you don’t have any important data on the drive, you can choose the ‘Reset This PC’ option. This will wipe all data on the drive, but reset your PC giving you the option to use the drive again.


How to Read a Mac Drive (HFS+ and APFS) from Windows Systems?


Windows systems, by default, cannot read from Mac formatted drives. So when you connect a Mac formatted (as in HFS+ or APFS) drive to Windows system, it will offer to erase it and format it in order to make it compatible.

However, if you’ve foreseen that you are going to use a particular device on both Windows and Mac, then it will usually be formatted with exFAT, which is compatible with both these systems. If that’s not the case, your drive will be formatted with HFS+ or APFS file systems in most cases.

HFS+ was introduced in 1998 as a successor of Mac’s first file system, HFS. It was designed to support much larger files compared to HFS and also allowed for better space utilization.

But with the release of the new OS High Sierra, Mac introduced a new file system called APFS. APFS is aimed to fix some core issues of HFS+ such as concurrent file system access and sparse file support.

This is a basic tool if all you need is to read some files from an HFS+ formatted drive from your Windows PC’s. It doesn’t allow you to write to these Mac drives, but it can be used to read from HFS, HFS+ and HFSX drives.

The advantage of this tool is that it is completely free to use allowing you to read and copy files from the Mac drives.

Note: If you encounter a situation where partitions are lost or corrupt due to using disk management tools, due to bad sectors or due to other reasons, use Remo Recover to recover lost partitions on Mac. This tool can also be used to recover HFS partitions, HFS+ partitions and supports all Mac OS versions.

Option 2: APFS for Windows by Paragon

If you want to read and write files to APFS formatted drives, then this tool is a good choice. It supports APFS formatted SSD’s, HDD’s and flash drives.

Although this is not a free tool, you can invest in it if you regularly read and write from APFS formatted drives through Windows. Once you download the software, just connect your APFS drive and it will show up in Explorer. Just click on the drive and access it like you would any other drive.

Option 3: MacDrive (Supports both HFS+ and APFS)

MacDrive is a tool that allows you to read from both HFS+ and APFS drives. In addition to reading files, it also supports writing into these drives.

Again, although this is a paid tool, it can be useful if you use APFS or HFS+ formatted drives from Windows systems regularly. There is nothing fancy you need to learn to use this tool. Just download the software and connect your Mac drive, the drive will show up just like any other drive for you to access.

Option 4: UFS Explorer (Supports both HFS+ and APFS)

UFS Explorer is another great tool to access APFS and HFS+ drives from Windows systems. This tool offers both free and paid versions. The free version allows you to read Mac drives, but has limitations w.r.t file size and save functionality. But the paid version offers all features and allows you to work with APFS and HFS+ file systems, disk images, RAID arrays, and virtual disks.

Each command will some little time to complete the scan process. When done, restart your system.

Step 5: Run SFC

  • Launch elevated Command Prompt (Run as administrator), type sfc /scannow and hit Enter key.

Stop using the computer until SFC finishes the scanning process. After done you will see any one of the below messages:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations- Close CMD window
  • Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation– If so, then try running the SFC in Safe Mode
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them Corrupt files are fixed so, restart your system
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of themCheck log file and manually replace corrupt files

Step 6: Reset Theme and Store Cache

  • Right-click on the desktop and select Personalize option.
  • Select Themes. Under Apply a theme, select Windows 10.
  • Next, open the Run app (press Windows R keys), type WSReset.ext and hit OK.

  • Once the resetting store cache is done, reboot the computer.

Step 7: Disable Encryption

  • Open Control Panel and click on the System and Security button.
  • Next, select BitLocker Drive Encryption from the shown options.
  • Make sure you will see the “BitLocker off” tag for all drives/partitions.

  • If any of the drives are BitLocker encrypted, then Turn Off BitLocker for it.
  • Restart the system and check File System Error (- 2147219196) is solved.
