If you’re an Anglophile, which is a fan of all things British, or a lover of antiques, then a Victorian-era kitchen may be right up your alley. Since Victorian designs make use of larger furnishings, the style is more suited for medium or large kitchens. These Victorian kitchen design ideas can help you create one in your home.
Victorian Design Elements
Homes that have a Victorian design aesthetic are not light and airy. Instead, due to the heavy furnishings and dark colors, they appear opulent and have an air of romance about them. You can include this design in your kitchen by using larger, dark wood cabinetry, a large center island, and painting the walls a rich color.
Victorian Era Colors
Some of the modern colors that work well for a Victorian kitchen include jewel tones like deep red, blue, green, yellow, and purple. They can be painted on the walls and found in the fabric of the chairs in the room. If you don’t know what jewel tones look like, here are some examples. Gold framed art or inserts in the walls can also help imitate the style of the Victorian-era kitchen.
Dark Wood Tones
Even though the color on the walls may be darker, the cabinetry, peninsula or center island, the flooring, or furnishings can also be dark. Dark woods like walnut, cherry, or mahogany with a gloss finish would look beautiful in this style of kitchen. Even though some people love this type of design, Victorian kitchens are not found very often. In a recent kitchen design survey, only 0.16% of over 1.78 million homes had this style in their kitchens.
Since Victorian designs tend to be darker if you want to lighten the room, have the cabinets finished in white. They would be a good contrast to the dark colors on the wall. The use of overhead lights is also important because, with dark paint colors and dark wood tones, the kitchen will need to be brightened, so everyone to see what they are doing.
The cabinets in a Victorian-era kitchen should have some opulence, so select a beaded inset cabinet style and have the insets trimmed in gold paint. The center island can also be trimmed in gold to carry the style throughout the room.
