TKDC - Dark Kitchen

A current striking and popular trend is the feature of dark cabinetry. Whether it’s a smooth laminate look or a charcoal 2pac shaker door, many kitchen styles have ways of bringing this element in to suit different homes. When executed well, it looks amazing in large or small kitchens.

For as beautiful as dark kitchens look, if you’ve ever owned one or been responsible for cleaning it, you’ll know it can be challenging. Whether it’s a matt, satin, semi-gloss or gloss finish, finger marks and water spills always stand out and can be hard to remove sometimes. Because of the way the light reflects off a dark surface, the marks are often more obvious than on a lighter colour surface. If the mark is from an oily product, (for example dirty fingers from cooking) removing this with a standard household cleaning spray can sometimes be ineffective as it doesn’t break down the oil. The other consideration is the streak marks that can be left behind by the cleaning product itself.

Rather than using a household spray cleaner, try warm soapy water with a microfiber cloth. If this leaves streak marks, follow up with a window cleaner spray using a clean microfiber cloth. On a laminate door, a mixture of eucalyptus oil and water in a spray works well to break down the grease and won’t leave streak marks. Don’t clean 2pac doors with any solvent based products.
Always use a microfiber cloth when wiping your doors as this will avoid fine scratches from appearing (especially important if the door is a gloss finish).
Be sure to check the label on the cleaning product you choose as certain surfaces can be damaged when cleaned with the wrong products.
