100 years ago some form of fire, usually a large cooking fireplace with stove above was commonplace in the kitchen.

These days, a fireplace in or near a kitchen, while not necessarily a luxury, is not terribly common… but is growing in popularity as open concept living is implemented in more and more homes.

With an open concept layout, often the adjacent living or family room has a fireplace which when done well, is also in clear view from the kitchen.

At the end of the day, a fireplace in any room adds a nice aesthetic touch and if heat-emitting can warm up the space.

One of my favorite fireplace/kitchen combos

Actually, this is one of my favorite fireplace concepts and that is the see-through fireplace that has glass to see the fire on two sides.  You can then view the fireplace from the kitchen and an adjacent room whether a dining room or living/family room.

This is particularly awesome with ribbon style fireplaces which are embedded into the wall.  It’s often referred to as a modern style fireplace; they are sleek and wide.

While it’s easy deciding whether you want a fireplace in your kitchen or not, what’s even more difficult is if you want a fireplace in or adjacent to your kitchen, is choosing a fireplace.  The options, styles, sizes, materials, and designs are endless.

Is the space it takes up worth it?

Let’s face it, space is at a premium in most kitchens.  Do you want to give up cabinet/storage/countertop space for a fireplace?  Most people don’t want to and I totally get it.  However, if you’re in a position where adding some extra space for a fireplace in your kitchen, it can be a really nice tough design-wise.

That said, I wouldn’t compromise important functional space for a fireplace; you really need extra space that you won’t miss.
