Reasons for the USB error ‘The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer’
Before we move onto the solutions, let us first understand the reasons for the error. Some of the main reasons for this error are described as follows.

- Bad sectors on the USB
- Virus attacks
- Ejecting the USB during a data transfer
Solutions to resolve the error ‘The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer’
Solution 1: Initialize the USB device
The first solution we provide here is to click on the ‘Initialize’ button in the error message screen.
- Once you click Initialize, the Disk Utility window will open
- Then click on View > Show All Devices
- Select the external drive from the list of devices on the left pane and click First Aid
- Click Repair Disk for Disk Utility to repair the drive
Disk Utility will repair the drive if it finds any corruption issues that it can repair. If it can’t repair the drive, you will receive a message ‘Disk Utility can’t repair this disk’. In that case, proceed to the next step.
Solution 2: Recover data and format USB drive
If Disk Utility cannot repair your disk, it means that the drive is severely corrupt. In that case, it is a good idea to recover data and format the drive. In order to recover from unreadable or inaccessible USB drives, Remo Recover is a fantastic solution. It is capable of recovering data from USB drives that display ‘disk unreadable’ errors or inaccessible USB. It is also referred to as a USB partition recovery tool as it can be used to recover data from formatted or partitioned USBs.
The advantage of using this software is that all your data will be recovered in the same form as it was originally. All kinds of files like Word documents, Excel files, photos, videos etc can be recovered using this software.
Once you’ve recovered data from the USB drive using Remo Recover, you can format it to resolve the error. To format the drive, follow the steps listed below.
Format the USB drive
Once again, go to Disk Utility screen by clicking on Finder > Applications > Disk Utility and follow the steps below.
- Click on the USB drive from the left pane
- Click Erase to format the drive
- Choose a name for the drive, select a file format and click Erase
- Then your USB drive will be formatted based on the file system you’ve selected
Now that you’ve formatted the USB drive, the error will be resolved and the USB should be ready to use. If formatting doesn’t resolve the error, you may need to replace the USB drive.
