Easy Fixes for SD Card can’t be Written to Error

You’ve been using your SD card with no problems. But all of a sudden you are not able to write to it. You may even receive an error ‘SD card is mounted read-only’.

Before you go ahead and take extreme measures such as perform a complete format, there are other troubleshooting methods that you can try.

Solution 1: Fix FAT file system

Because of a FAT error, your card could be being mounted as read-only. To fix this issue, follow the steps below.

  1. Connect SD card to your PC
  2. Open File Explorer by going to Start > My Computer
  3. Identify your SD card and right click on it
  4. Select Properties > Tools
  5. Then click on Check Now to automatically fix file system errors
  6. Once the fix is complete, safely unplug the SD card and re-connect it to your PC

Your card should be working again with both read and write features. If this method doesn’t resolve the issue, you can try unlocking the SD card.

Solution 2: Unlock the SD card

A lock switch is present on the left side of the SD card. If this is the switch is locked, you won’t be able to write to it. Slide it up to unlock the card and enable write operation.

If these methods don’t fix the issue, it is a good idea to backup data and format the card.

Solution 3: Format your SD card

If you have a backup, format the SD card and check if it resolves the issue. To format the card, follow the steps below.

  1. Connect the SD card to your system
  2. Press Windows + X to open the elevated menu and select Disk Management
  3. Identify your SD card and right click on it
  4. Select Format to format your card
  5. Choose a file system (FAT32 is good for small SD cards, choose ExFAT for SD cards 64GB and above)
  6. Assign a name in the Volume Label section for the formatted drive
  7. Click Start to format your card.
