Superimposition is basically putting one thing over another to add to the overall effect or to hide something. As far as video goes, you are combining two or more video clips to produce a single video by laying one on top of another. By adjusting their opacity, you can view both these videos.

Before we start off with our method to superimpose videos, you will need some video clips and a video editing software. You can use any one of Windows Movie Maker, iMovie, Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid, Final Cut Pro, Sony Vegas.

  • Open your video-editing software.
  • Click on New Project.
  • Click on File -> Import. You can select video clips that you want to superimpose.
  • Drag the first video to your Editing timeline and place it on Video Track 1. The thin vertical line can be moved to watch the clip through Preview Monitor.
  • Now drag the second video to your Editing timeline and place it on Video Track 2. Now, this video appears on Preview Monitor by default since it is on top now.
  • Highlight first and second video clips by selecting them in your timeline. Use “Composite” or “Superimpose” function to achieve the superimposition effect.
  • You can change the appearance of each video depending on your program’s available superimposition effect options. Keep checking the changes on your Preview Monitor if the videos have given you the look you are after.
  • Play around with video clip’s opacity to make it translucent.
  • Once you are satisfied with the superimposition achieved, click Render You can find it under Sequence, Video or Effects menu. The rendering process gives you a final output based on all the superimposed effects added by you in the timeline.
  • You can export the video to your preferred format – AVI, MOV, MP4, WMV and the resolution – 720p, 1080p, 480p, 360p and so on.
