Error messages such as ‘File or directory is corrupt and unreadable’ when trying to access drives in your system are common. The error also occurs with USBs or any storage device.
The main reason for this error is corruption in files. File corruption happens when the computer is shut down improperly either manually or due to power loss. It does not happen always but occurs when the computer has not saved information that it needs to run again properly. With USB’s, ejecting the device while data transfer is in progress can lead to corruption.
How to fix file corruption
Microsoft offers a built-in tool called CHKDSK to fix file corruption. It checks the integrity of the files and file structure in your hard disk. Some parameters such as ‘F’ and ‘R’ are used with CHKDSK to fix the errors if it finds any. To run the tool in Windows 10,
- Press Windows + X on your keyboard
- From the menu, select Command Prompt (Admin)
- Type CHKDSK <your drive letter> /F
(For example, CHKDSK D: /F scans the D: drive and fixes any issues)
The tool scans your drive and fixes any issues it finds. Then, type EXIT to exit from the command line once the repair is complete.
NOTE: Running CHKDSK does not cause data loss. But if CHKDSK encounters any bad sectors on your drive, it will attempt to repair it. So, data on that sector may be lost. As a precautionary measure, it is best to backup data on the drive before running the tool.
How to access data from the drive with an error message ‘The file or directory is corrupt and unreadable’?
In severe cases when CHKDSK does not solve your problem, you will have no option but to format your drive. Formatting will clear all contents from the drive and prepare it for use. So, before you format your drive, you will need to backup all your data. But how do you access data on the drive with an error message ‘The file or directory is corrupt and unreadable’?
Don’t worry! You have Remo Recover to the rescue! It is a great tool to recover data from corrupt and inaccessible drives. The tool is capable of recovering partitions with complete folder structure. Formatted your drive and lost data?
