The Future of Secure Storage Devices

THE FUTURE OF SECURE STORAGE DEVICES

Many organizations in various sectors of our economy have their own set of top secret information, like the KFC’s secret recipe, which they wouldn’t want anyone to unearth. With the rapid advancement of technology, everyone started using more efficient storage devices for storing their important data. But up to what extent are these data secure?

A London man found a USB stick on a pavement in west London and (unwisely) plugged it into a computer, only to discover that it contained 76 folders with at least 174 documents full of sensitive information on the security arrangements at Heathrow airport, including ID’s needed to access restricted areas, a timetable of security patrols and maps pinpointing CCTV cameras as well as the measures used to protect the Queen when she flies through LHR.

The stick was not encrypted nor password protected. There were also documents discussing recent terror attacks in London and what risk they posed to the airport. Heathrow said all of its security plans had been reviewed and it was Confident the airport was secure.

In this era of growing cyber crimes, a professional hacker could probably succumb all the top-secret data of an organization into his hands easily. Tons of top-secret data are being exposed by different hackers every year. When these stolen data fall into the wrong hands, the world turns into an uncomfortable place to live by.

A 2017 data breach report from Risk Based Security (RBS), a provider of real-time information and risk analysis tools, has revealed there has been a 30.5% increase in the number of records exposed in data breaches in the past year.

The main cause of the data breaches last year was hacking. 1,997 data breaches were due to hacks, 433 breaches were due to skimming, phishing was behind 290 breaches, viruses caused 256 breaches, and 206 breaches were due to web attacks.

However, there are many ways to remove the shortcut virus from your pen drive and other USB drives, and you just have to follow the simple methods to eliminate the harmful viruses from the pen drive to safeguard your data.

Safeguard your Data:

Here comes the concept of a safer and secure storage device for storing valuable information, which can only be used on a single computer and turns defective when used on another. The main advantage of this Pen drive is to prevent data piracy.

“Mobile devices are simple to carry from one workplace to the next, but they can be easy to lose. To protect our data, we need a way to prevent unauthorized people from accessing the contents of a lost or stolen device”, says Nick Banks, vice president of Imation Mobile Security,

The secure pen drive, when used upon an unfamiliar system, acts as an HID (Human Interface Device) called Bad USB, which reprograms the microcontroller to act as an HID or keyboard. It then performs custom keystrokes on the target machine, entering malicious commands into the system on which it is used on. This process corrupts the data on the storage device.

The Smart Indian Hackathon, a digital product development competition conducted between numerous groups of engineering students, from different states across India, headed by the Human Resource Development ministry of the Indian government was conducted on March 2018. The main topic put forward for the contest was data theft.

In the hackathon, a group of students from Tamil Nadu brought together this idea of a safer storage device, which only works on one system and turns defective or corrupt when used on another. This discovery changes the face of data security.

“The students have developed a secure pen drive which will not work in another system and keep the data safe.”, said the Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar, Indian Government while announcing the second edition of Smart India Hackathon.

Post-hackathon, all winning 135 teams in the Grand Finale were asked to engage with respective ministries to take the projects forward.

The Ministries had informed that at least 27 projects will be implemented and adopted by different departments, by the end of April or mid-May 2018.

With this invention on the go, the future of USB flash drive security is in safe hands.

What to do if the files get deleted/lost from Pen Drives?

Though this pen drive comes out with many advantages, like other USB devices, data from it can get deleted or lost at any time. It can be either due to accidental deletion, formatting the drive, or other reasons. If this is the case, then you don’t have to become panicked. Until the deleted or lost files from pen drive are not overwritten, one can easily get back the deleted files from pen drive with the help of professional Pen drive data recovery software from Remo. Remo Recover software restores images, videos, documents, PDF files, and much more easily in three easy-to-execute steps.

How to Resolve “Attempting to validate BBT Refcounts” in Outlook

PST or Personal Storage Table contains all your emails, contacts, tasks, calendar and other information on Microsoft Outlook. The PST file can get corrupted due to several reasons including the presence of bad sectors on the file, software conflicts, abrupt power shutdown, virus infection, broken file system, improper termination of Outlook and so on.

When you encounter PST corruption, you tend to go for scanpst.exe to repair your file. However, there are cases when a scanpst.exe application fails to get rid of corruption and fix your file. Instead, you get an error message

“Attempting to validate BBT Refcounts” Or

“Couldn’t find BBT entry in the RBT (211C8)”

Here are some of the drawbacks of Scanpst.exe:

  • It cannot repair major corruption issues.
  • It cannot repair password protected files.
  • It does not support the repair if corruption occurs in the body part of the file.
  • There are times when it accidentally deletes emails during the repair process.
  • It cannot repair large sized PST files.

Let us look at few solutions to overcome this problem.

  1. Reduce PST file size

One can go about getting rid of causes. You can reduce PST file size by deleting unnecessary emails, tasks, draft messages, emptying Deleted Items folder.

Once the PST file size has reduced within permissible limits (Outlook 2002 and lower – 2 GB), (Outlook 2003, 2007 – 20 GB), (Outlook 2010, 2013, 2016 – 50 GB), you can use scanpst.exe to root out corruption in your PST file.

  1. Disable Add-ins

PST file corruption can also be caused by Outlook Add-ins. Here’s how you can disable them:

  • Click File -> Options -> Add-ins.
  • At the bottom of the window, where it shows Manage, click Go.
  • Now select all the Add-ins you want to disable.
  • To disable the Add-in, just uncheck the box in front of its name. To uninstall the Add-in, select it and click Remove.
  • Click OK to save the changes.
  1. Reinstall Microsoft Outlook

If PST file corruption was caused due to corrupted Outlook registry, you can reinstall Outlook to get rid of this error.

  • Click on Start
  • Type Control Panel in the search bar.
  • Click on Control Panel in the search result.
  • Now click on Programs and Features.
  • In the list of installed applications, right-click on Microsoft Office and click Uninstall.
  • After Office suite is uninstalled, reinstall it.

If the PST file is corrupted even after reinstalling Microsoft Outlook, you can try the ever-reliable Remo Repair Outlook software to repair the corrupt PST file.

  1. Using Remo Repair Outlook

Remo Repair Outlook software repairs your corrupt PST file by following a non-destructive mechanism. It first reads the corrupt PST file, extracts contents from it and copies it into a new healthy file while fixing all the issues. Hence, your source file is unaffected.

You can also check out how to run inbox repair tool scanpst.exe.

Remo Repair Outlook is more efficient compared to scanpst.exe. It makes the PST file accessible when Microsoft Inbox Repair tool is not responding.

The PST repair tool can fix even an oversized PST file and works well on all versions of Windows and Mac Operating systems.

Once the repair process is complete, the software lets you view the repaired file using the Preview feature. You can later save it to a destination folder of your choice.

Steps to Convert Existing Partitions for use with UEFI Firmware

Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) is a specification for a software program that connects your computer’s firmware to its Operating system. It is set to replace BIOS in the not-so-distant future.

Most systems use the Master Boot Record (MBR) partition scheme. Even though it works well with BIOS (Basic Input/ Output System), MBR has a lot of drawbacks. The GUID partition table (GPT) was made for this precise purpose – to provide secure access to BIOS available on newer systems.

As we make rapid technological advancements, the future lies in UEFI. In fact, all the storage devices larger than 2 TB or multi-boot systems running Windows, Mac, and Linux require GPT and UEFI or the system partitions won’t boot. MBR disks support only four partition table entries. If you need more partitions, you need to create an extended partition.

Not too long ago, you had to manually format your drives with the GPT scheme and reinstall the OS so they conform to UEFI requirements. While making this change, chances of data loss exist.

Here are ways to convert MBR to GPT.

  1. Using Windows interface
  • Back up or move data on MBR disk you want to convert to GPT disk.
  • If there are any partitions or volumes in the disk, right-click each of them and click Delete Partition or Delete Volume.
  • Now right-click the MBR disk that you want to convert and click Convert to GPT disk.
  1. Using Command Prompt
  • Back up or move data on MBR disk you want to convert to GPT disk.
  • Click on Start Type Command Prompt in the search bar.
  • In the search results, right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator.
  • Type diskpart. If there are no partitions or volumes, you can skip to Step 7.
  • In DISKPART prompt, type list disk. Note down the disk number that you want to convert.
  • In DISKPART, type disk <disknumber>.
  • In DISKPART, type clean.

Note that clean command will delete all your partitions or volumes on the disk.

  • In DISKPART window, type convert gpt.

If you lost data in the process of trying out any of the above solutions, Remo Recover software can restore all the data for you.

Data recovery using Remo Recover software

Remo Recover software uses strong built-in algorithms to scan the entire drive and restore data. The data recovery software is equipped to retrieve files from lost, deleted, formatted or re-formatted drives and partitions as well.

Check out how the software aids you in raw partition recovery.

Fixed – Unable to Access PST File or Start Outlook after Upgrading to Windows 10

When you upgrade to Windows 10, some issues are known to occur. Trouble using Outlook is one of them. To troubleshoot this issue, please follow the steps explained in this guide.

  1. Disable add-ins

Sure, add-ins improve Outlook functionality, however, at times, they can interfere with the normal functioning. To rule out the issue with add-ins, please follow the steps below:

  1. Press Windows + R key on your keyboard
  2. Then type Outlook/safe and hit Enter
  3. If Outlook starts normally, follow the next steps
  4. Choose File > Options > Add-ins
  5. In Manage drop-down, select COM add-ins
  6. Clear all checkboxes and close Outlook

Then open Outlook again, and enable add-ins one by one. Restart Outlook each time you enable an add-in. This will help identify the trouble causing add-in.

  1. Make sure Outlook is not running in compatibility mode

Compatibility mode is designed to run older versions of software on Windows 10. Outlook is optimized for Windows 10, so there’s no reason to use compatibility mode. At times, running in compatibility may cause issues with opening Outlook.

To disable compatibility mode, right click on Outlook shortcut and choose Properties. In Compatibility tab, make sure ‘Run this program in compatibility mode’ is disabled. Click on Apply and confirm your choice.

  1. Delete Outlook cache

Clearing Outlook cache may restore functionality. To delete Outlook app data folder, you can follow the simple steps.

  2. Enter %localappdata%
  3. Look for Microsoft and locate Outlook folder
  4. Delete it and restart Outlook
  5. If this doesn’t fix your issue, you can try assigning permissions as described in the next step.

  1. Change permissions

When opening Outlook, you may also receive error messages as shown.

‘Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook Window. The set of folders cannot be opened. File access is denied. You do not have permission to access the file’.

This happens when you log in to Windows with a Microsoft account instead of a local account. The permissions are not assigned correctly in this case. To regain access, you can follow the steps here.

  1. Right-click on the Start button and choose File Explorer
  2. Select the location of the file (indicated in the error message)
  3. Right-click on the file and select Properties
  4. Select Security > Edit > Select your user account
  5. Select Full Control permission and click Ok
  6. Repeat the same steps for System and Administrators as well
  7. Then restart Outlook and check if the error persists

  1. Repair PST file

Outlook saves a backup of all email accounts in a file called PST. It is saved locally on your system. If this file gets corrupt, your Outlook may not start properly or have trouble functioning normally. To repair this file, Microsoft offers a built-in tool called Scanpst.exe. You can run this tool using the steps below.

  • The location of Scanpst is different for all Outlook versions. So, it’s easy to find it using Search. In the Search bar, find Scanpst.exe
  • Double click on the application and browse the location of the PST file. (If you do not know the location of the PST file, here’s a tip for you to find it. On your Outlook page, select File > Account Settings > Account settings, and then choose the second tab; data files. All your PST files along with its location will be listed).
  • Then click on Repair to repair the file

Disadvantages of using Scanpst

The tool can take a long time and may require you to run it multiple times before the error can be fixed. These methods also involve risk of losing valuable data. Hence, it is best to use professional tools designed specifically for this purpose.

Remo offers a tool called Remo Repair PST designed to fix issues with PST files. It extracts contents of your corrupt PST file. Then, it repairs the issues and generates healthy files.

It is a simple to use software and users without technical knowledge can use it with onscreen instructions provided. Once the file is repaired, you can view the file using Preview feature. Detailed steps along with screenshots are explained in this guide Outlook 2016 PST repair software.

Steps for Fixing Corrupt Directory on Windows

Error messages such as ‘File or directory is corrupt and unreadable’ when trying to access drives in your system are common. The error also occurs with USBs or any storage device.

The main reason for this error is corruption in files. File corruption happens when the computer is shut down improperly either manually or due to power loss. It does not happen always but occurs when the computer has not saved information that it needs to run again properly. With USB’s, ejecting the device while data transfer is in progress can lead to corruption.

How to fix file corruption

Microsoft offers a built-in tool called CHKDSK to fix file corruption. It checks the integrity of the files and file structure in your hard disk. Some parameters such as ‘F’ and ‘R’ are used with CHKDSK to fix the errors if it finds any. To run the tool in Windows 10,

  • Press Windows + X on your keyboard
  • From the menu, select Command Prompt (Admin)
  • Type CHKDSK <your drive letter> /F

(For example, CHKDSK D: /F scans the D: drive and fixes any issues)

The tool scans your drive and fixes any issues it finds. Then, type EXIT to exit from the command line once the repair is complete.

NOTE: Running CHKDSK does not cause data loss. But if CHKDSK encounters any bad sectors on your drive, it will attempt to repair it. So, data on that sector may be lost. As a precautionary measure, it is best to backup data on the drive before running the tool.

How to access data from the drive with an error message ‘The file or directory is corrupt and unreadable’?

In severe cases when CHKDSK does not solve your problem, you will have no option but to format your drive. Formatting will clear all contents from the drive and prepare it for use. So, before you format your drive, you will need to backup all your data. But how do you access data on the drive with an error message ‘The file or directory is corrupt and unreadable’?

Don’t worry! You have Remo Recover to the rescue! It is a great tool to recover data from corrupt and inaccessible drives. The tool is capable of recovering partitions with complete folder structure. You don’t have to worry about damage to your data. It works on a read-only, so your data remains unaltered during recovery.

Mistakes in partitioning a drive or virus attacks may also cause partitions to get lost or deleted. Remo Recover can be used to recover deleted partitions. Recover deleted partitions in Windows 10 explains the steps thoroughly.

Compatibility of Remo Recover

  1. All file systems such as NTFS, FAT 16, FAT 32 etc. are supported
  2. Supports RAID arrays such as RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5 etc.
  3. Compatible with Windows XP, Vista, Windows 2003 up to 2010.
  4. A variant of the software is available for Mac users called Remo Recover Mac is available
  5. Supports recovery not only from internal hard drives but also from external hard drives, USB’s and memory cards.

Formatted your drive and lost data?

You may have formatted your drive accidentally and don’t have a backup. As a consequence of formatting, all data will be lost. Remo Recover software can be used in these cases as well. The guide how to recover formatted partitions in Windows 10 explains the process in detail.
