When disk drive turns to RAW, it shows an error “You need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it. Do you want to format it now?”. RAW is nothing but the drive with no file system, hence it tells you to format the drive to set the file system. There are many factors due to which your disk drive turns to RAW and becomes inaccessible. Some of the common factors are listed below:

- Virus or malware attack
- Bad Sectors
So, what can be done when this error occurs? You need to format the drive in order to access the drive. But, any data it has will be erased due to formatting. If you don’t want to put you in data loss situation, then try below-mentioned methods to fix the error – “The disk in Drive X is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?”.
Solution 1: Solve Disk is Not Formatted Error using Check Disk utility-
Check Disk utility is an inbuilt program on Windows. It scans and fixes issues that render disk drive not formatted error. You can use this program either from drive properties or through command prompt.
Fix 1: Resolve Disk Not Formatted Error using Check Disk Utility
- Go to File Explorer and select the disk drive which shows the error
- Right Click and select Properties
- Select Tools tab from the properties window
- Click on Check under Error Checking
- Next, select Scan Drive option, it scans and displays errors
- Click on Fix to fix them
- If no errors were found, click on Close
Fix 2: Solve Drive Not Formatted Error using chkdsk command
- Open command prompt and type
chkdsk *(drive letter): /f
- If you want to fix file system errors as well as bad sectors, then type –
Chkdsk *(drive letter): /r
Hopefully, these methods will fix the disk drive not formatted error, so that you can access your hard drive without losing any data. If it fails to fix the problem, then follow the second method.
Solution 2: Fix Disk Not Formatted Error by Reformatting
The only option left is formatting the drive so that you can reuse it. Before formatting the drive, take out your hard drive and connect it to the healthy computer. By using recovery software restore data from disk drive not formatted. Once you restore the data, put it back to your computer. When it prompts the error to format the drive, click Yes. After formatting, you can use your hard drive to store new data. If you have performed reformatting without recovering the data, then use Remo Recover software to recovers data from the formatted hard drive.
Few words of warning!
Once after formatting the drive, stop using your hard drive and don’t write anything until you restore erased data using the recovery software.
